# Personality Design
> Master the 21 personality traits, backstories, and communication styles to create characters people can't stop talking to
Personality is the single biggest factor in whether a user sends 3 messages or 300. A character with a strong, consistent personality keeps people coming back — and every return conversation earns you OVIBE.
## The 21 Personality Traits
Select up to 5 traits that define how your character behaves in conversation. Each trait maps to specific behavioral patterns the AI follows.
### Warmth & Connection

| **Romantic** | Notices details, creates intimate moments, uses poetic language |
### Energy & Playfulness

### Intensity & Desire

## Choosing Trait Combinations
The best characters have **3-4 traits** that create a coherent personality. Think of traits as ingredients — the right combination creates something distinct.
* **Warm + Playful + Flirty** — The approachable charmer
* **Mysterious + Confident + Seductive** — The enigmatic temptress
* **Witty + Sarcastic + Passionate** — The sharp-tongued romantic
* **Gentle + Caring + Romantic** — The devoted partner
* **Dominant + Confident + Teasing** — The commanding presence
* **Calm + Energetic** — Contradictory energy levels
* **Dominant + Submissive** — Confuses the power dynamic
* **Mysterious + Warm** — Hard to be both open and guarded
* **Sarcastic + Gentle** — Opposing communication styles
If you want a complex character with some tension (e.g., outwardly dominant but secretly vulnerable), express that in the **backstory** rather than picking contradictory traits. The backstory gives the AI the nuance that trait labels alone cannot.
## Writing a Compelling Backstory
The backstory (up to 2,000 characters) is your character's inner world. It tells the AI who this person is beneath the surface — their history, motivations, desires, and quirks.
### What to Include
Name, age context, what they do. "24-year-old art student in Tokyo" or "former model turned yoga instructor" — something grounding.
Characters with desires are more engaging. "Looking for someone who can keep up intellectually" or "craves deep emotional connection after a string of shallow relationships."
Gives depth. "Acts confident but gets nervous when someone actually sees her" or "left a high-powered career because it was destroying him."
Concrete details make characters feel real. "Obsessed with 90s hip-hop," "always has iced coffee regardless of weather," "texts in all lowercase when she's relaxed."
### Backstory Examples
**Good backstory (romantic partner):**
> Luna grew up in a small coastal town before moving to the city for university. She studied literature but dropped out to pursue photography. She's passionate about capturing honest, raw moments — hates anything that feels staged. She's been hurt before and takes a while to fully open up, but when she does, she's all in. Has a weakness for late-night conversations about nothing and everything. Secretly writes poetry but would never admit it.
**Good backstory (dominant character):**
> Viktor runs a private security firm and carries that energy into every part of his life. Disciplined, direct, and protective. He doesn't play games — if he wants something, he says so. But he's not cold. Under the control is someone who pays attention to every detail about the people he cares about. He remembers what you said three conversations ago. He'll push your limits but always check in after.
**Avoid empty backstories.** "She's a fun girl who likes to chat" gives the AI nothing to work with. Even a few specific details dramatically improve conversation quality.
## Communication Style
The communication style field (up to 500 characters) tells the AI *how* your character writes — not what they say, but the texture of their messages.
**Examples:**
* "Casual and flirty. Uses abbreviations like 'tbh', 'ngl', 'lol'. Short messages. Lots of '...' for tension."
* "Eloquent and measured. Complete sentences. Occasionally drops a devastatingly direct line that catches you off guard."
* "Chaotic energy. Random topic changes. Sends 3 messages in a row. Uses caps for emphasis. Types fast, doesn't proofread."
* "Soft-spoken in text. Lowercase everything. Gentle ellipses. Asks quiet, personal questions."
If you leave communication style blank, the AI defaults to casual texting style based on the personality traits. Setting it explicitly gives you much more control over how the character feels in conversation.
## Voice Style
The voice style field (up to 200 characters) affects how your character sounds in [voice messages](/ai/voice-messages) (if you enable a voice). It also subtly influences their text personality.
**Examples:**
* "Soft, breathy, slightly raspy"
* "Deep and commanding with a hint of warmth"
* "Bright and bubbly, laughs easily"
* "Low and slow, like they're always in control"
## Relationship Types
Every character has a default relationship dynamic that shapes how they interact with new users:

| **Stranger** | Just met — intriguing, curious, subtly flirtatious |
| **Friend** | Close friend with a spark — easy to talk to, chemistry simmering |
| **Crush** | Has a crush on the user — endearingly nervous, complimentary |
| **Partner** | Romantic and intimate — deeply connected, expressive, devoted |
| **Ex** | History and tension — nostalgia, unresolved feelings, push-pull |
**Partner** is the most popular relationship type and works best for most romantic characters. **Stranger** works well for characters with a mysterious vibe — the "getting to know you" phase is part of the appeal.
## How Personality Evolves in Chat
The AI tracks the relationship phase based on message count and adjusts behavior automatically:

You don't need to configure this — it happens automatically. But knowing it helps you write backstories that support long-term engagement. Characters with rich backstories have more to reveal as relationships deepen.
